Women have played a significant role in the history of art, although they have often been underrepresented and less recognized than their male counterparts.
Throughout the centuries, female artists have challenged social expectations and left an indelible mark on the art world with their creativity, innovation, and unique perspectives.
In Western art history, women often faced barriers to accessing formal art education and exhibiting their work in galleries and museums.
Despite these challenges, many women found ways to express themselves through art, whether as painters, sculptors, printmakers, or in other forms of visual expression.
Starting from the Renaissance, some women artists managed to stand out, although their names often remained overshadowed by their male contemporaries.
Some notable figures include Artemisia Gentileschi, an Italian Baroque painter known for her powerful works, and Sofonisba Anguissola, a prominent Renaissance portraitist.
In the following centuries, more women began to gain recognition for their artistic work, especially during the art movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Impressionism and Modernism.
Female Artists like Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, and Georgia O’Keeffe challenged social norms and made significant contributions to the development of contemporary art.

3. Mathilde Vesterskov @BYMATHILDEVESTERSKOV
To introduce the artist, we share highlights of her story as told by herself:
“It all started in my old apartment back in 2017. I was looking for something simple and timeless for my wall. With paper, marker and frame in hand, my journey began. When we were kids, my sisters and I often played a drawing game in which the rule was that you couldn’t lift your pen from the paper but still draw a motif. This art form has always fascinated me and has an almost magical quality to it. The line must never stop, it must remain moving. It is the hand that controls and not the other way around. You have to surrender to the present, follow the line in the moment without worrying about the final result”.
“I drew my first real face online for a frame in my bedroom. At first I thought it looked a little strange, but the more I looked at it, the more expressions I could discover. I took a photo and shared it on my private Instagram story. Overwhelmingly, I received messages from both friends and strangers about the possibility of purchasing the work or if I could make more. I suddenly accepted the requests and the next day I went downtown, bought markers and paper and drew faces all day. The first week I was exhausted”.
“Not understanding what journey I had begun, I created a CVR number and a business profile on my Instagram account. Originally, it was just supposed to function as an online portfolio where I could share my ideas. More people started following my profile and buying my works, sometimes even after seeing just a corner of a work in a preview. The artist’s path had begun and my business grew while I also took care of my studio. In fact, I created the company the same week I started my studies”.
“In the first two years of my professional degree, I studied construction and design management at Kolding, where I gained invaluable knowledge about running a company. Many people think that I spend the day painting, but as a solopreneur there are a lot of tasks to complete in a day. It has been a fantastic experience learning everything from scratch and feeling the support of those who continue to buy my art.”
